WGU Student
Independent. We do not work for WGU, and nobody here is paid if you enrol.

Both sell you time. They sell it in very different sizes.

These two get shortlisted together constantly, and for good reason — both bill by the period rather than the credit, so speed lowers your total at either one. The difference that actually decides it is the size of the block you are forced to buy, because that is what sets how badly a bad month hurts.

Why the block size matters more than the price

A twelve-week block is a smaller bet. If life goes wrong — a rota change, an illness, a family month — you lose one session and roughly three thousand dollars, then start the next one. The damage is contained.

A six-month block is a bigger bet with a softer edge. You lose more if the whole term goes badly, but you have twice as long to absorb a bad six weeks without losing anything at all. A nurse who hits one rough patch per year is often better off at WGU precisely because the block is long enough to swallow it.

So the honest question is not which is cheaper. It is what your bad months look like — rare and severe, or frequent and mild.

Where each one is clearly better

Choose WGU if

  • You want the rubric to be the entire brief. Nothing is subjective here. You are told what competent looks like before you start, and hitting it is the whole job.
  • You have credit or certifications to bring. Competency assessment lets existing knowledge convert into finished courses rather than shortened ones.
  • Your availability is uneven. Six months absorbs a bad fortnight in a way twelve weeks cannot.
  • You are not going near a clinical track, or you are and you live somewhere with real preceptor supply.

Choose Capella if

  • You want smaller, more frequent commitments. Twelve weeks is easier to say yes to and easier to walk away from.
  • You want a grade that reflects quality. Capella distinguishes between adequate and excellent work; WGU records only that you cleared the bar.
  • You live in one of the six states WGU's NP tracks are closed to, which settles the matter without further debate.
  • You would rather solve placement yourself, anywhere, than be held to your state of residence.

The thing neither school will tell you

Both models reward the same person: someone who works without being chased. If that is not you, the cheaper school is not the one with the lower sticker price — it is the one with deadlines, and neither of these has any. A structured, term-based programme with due dates and an instructor will very often cost a deadline-dependent nurse less in the end, even at a higher advertised rate.

We would rather say that plainly than sell you either of these. It is also why we cover seventeen programmes instead of one.

One asymmetry worth pricing

On the nurse practitioner tracks WGU charges $7,155 a term, so its six-month block is more than twice the cost of a Capella session. The absorption argument above still holds, but it holds at a much higher price. Anyone comparing NP routes should run both totals across a realistic timeline rather than comparing a single block.

Run your own numbers against both

Twenty minutes, free, and the recommendation is as likely to be a third school as either of these two.
