Switching to WGU from another online nursing school

Short answer

Three things decide whether this goes well. Get every transcript in before your first WGU term starts, because nothing is awarded afterwards. Time the exit at a term boundary at your current school, since partly-used terms rarely refund. And be honest about why the last programme stalled — if the answer is "no deadlines", you are moving toward the problem, not away from it.

The transcript deadline is the whole ballgame

Transferring in is the single largest lever on your total at WGU, and it is the one with a hard cut-off. Transcripts received after your first term start date earn no credit at all — not delayed, not reviewed later, not awarded.

People switching schools are the group most likely to miss it, because they are mid-move and assume the paperwork can follow them. Order everything, from every institution, before you accept a start date. Including the school you are leaving.

How much will actually move

At graduate level you must complete at least half your degree's competency units at WGU excluding the capstone, so at most half can transfer, and every course is reviewed individually. Undergraduate transfer is considerably more generous, which matters if you are on an RN-to-MSN bridge.

Have the syllabus ready for anything unusual. "Not enough information to determine comparability" is the most common avoidable rejection there is, and it is entirely within your control.

Time the exit properly

Whatever you are leaving, work out what a partial term is worth there before you move. A per-credit school may leave you paying for a term you abandon; WGU's own flat fee behaves the same way in reverse. Moving at a boundary rather than mid-block is usually worth several thousand dollars and costs only patience.

The question worth sitting with

Ask honestly why the current programme is not working.

  • Too expensive per credit, and you work fast? WGU is a genuinely good answer. The flat fee rewards exactly that.
  • Placement fell through and your state has supply? Possibly — but check WGU's residence rule and the six closed states first, because its placement constraints are tighter, not looser.
  • You kept missing deadlines? This is the one to be careful about. WGU removes deadlines entirely. If external structure was the thing you were failing to meet, removing it does not fix the problem — it hides it for six months, and then presents a bill.
