Can you do WGU while working full time as a nurse?

Short answer

Yes, and the model is unusually well suited to it. Because nothing is scheduled, a six-month term absorbs a run of night shifts or a bad fortnight far better than a weekly calendar with due dates does. Most WGU nursing students work while studying.

Two caveats decide whether it works for you: you need genuinely protected hours rather than intended ones, and the tracks with clinical requirements are a different proposition entirely, because internship hours cannot be moved around a roster.

Why the term structure helps a shift worker

A conventional programme assumes a steady week. Nursing does not have steady weeks. Where a term-based school penalises you for missing a Thursday deadline during a run of nights, WGU simply does not notice — you are working towards a term boundary six months out, not a weekly one.

That is a genuine structural advantage, and it is the honest reason to prefer this model over a scheduled one if your roster moves.

The hours question, asked properly

The mistake is estimating the hours you intend to protect. Estimate instead the hours that survived last month — after overtime, after a sick colleague, after the week you swapped onto nights.

  • Under ten hours a week: clearing eight competency units a term is realistic; much beyond it is not. Budget for more terms than the headline figure and the flat fee still works.
  • Ten to twenty hours: the ordinary working-nurse band. Twelve or so competency units a term, finishing near WGU's published windows.
  • Twenty or more: genuine acceleration territory. This is where the flat term fee stops being neutral and becomes the cheapest route to a nursing master's available.

The clinical tracks are a different question

Everything above applies to the non-clinical master's routes. The FNP and PMHNP tracks add internship hours that must be completed in your state of residence, on a clinical site's schedule rather than yours — and those hours are not flexible in the way coursework is.

Nurses on those tracks routinely drop to part-time work for the clinical year, and that lost income belongs in your cost calculation. It is frequently larger than the tuition difference between two schools.

What actually goes wrong

Rarely the workload. Usually the absence of any external structure combined with a job that expands to fill available time. Nothing at WGU chases you, so the term drains quietly while you intend to start properly next week. The nurses who succeed almost always fix a specific recurring window and defend it.

Related questions

How many hours a week do you need for a WGU master's?

Ten to twenty hours a week is the ordinary band for a working nurse and lands you near WGU's published completion windows. Under ten hours is workable but means planning for more terms than the headline figure. Twenty or more is where genuine acceleration becomes possible.

Can you work full time during the FNP clinical year?

It is difficult. Internship hours must be completed in your state of residence on the clinical site's schedule, which does not flex around a roster the way coursework does. Many nurses reduce to part-time for that period, and the lost income should be counted as part of the true cost of the programme.

Is WGU harder than a traditional programme for a working nurse?

The material is not harder. What is harder is the absence of structure: no timetable, no cohort, no instructor noticing you have gone quiet, and no partial credit. Nurses who work well without supervision often find it easier than a scheduled programme; those who rely on external deadlines usually find it harder.

Do employers give tuition assistance for WGU?

Many do, since WGU is regionally accredited and its nursing programmes are CCNE-accredited, which is what most reimbursement policies require. Employer lists are narrower than accreditation, though, so check whether your specific employer names the school before you enrol rather than after.

Not sure your hours are really there?

That is the most useful twenty minutes we spend with anyone. We will work through last month rather than next month.
